Apologies if I misunderstood you. A patent lasts 20 years if you maintain payments on the renewal schedule. Then regardless of how much you are willing to pay, the patent expires. When it expires it just means that you can’t file litigation against someone else who markets the patent. This keeps good ideas that could benefit the public from sitting on the shelf. ABWN’s previous idea of connecting airplanes is now open to anyone. What ABWN did was file a new patent that gives them the exclusive right to the specific method of using light beam laser technology (and complementive/supportive radio frequencies) for data transferred within that network and various other components specific to the mesh network that has emerged from collaboration with iNTELLECOM MYNARIC and others. There are technologies patented by Qualcomm and others talking about light beams and pixels or free space optical communication using Hermite-Gaussian modes but they are all a sub category of a laser beam. If you examine these technologies closer you will see that they are not talking about a different communication technique from a laser, but more of what is contained in that laser or how it is transmitted, received or interpreted.
