...case in point:

Last trade = 1400 shares at $1.41

Bid = $1.42 for 100 shares
Ask = $1.44 for 15,0000 shares

Recognizing that the bid/ask delta is typically a penny in this stock, in the absence of a seller at $1.43, one stuffs the ask for 15k shares at the two cent delta mark to strike a reaction and see if sellers will emerge below $1.43 and push the stock down and feed the short strategy. Institutional shorts will often use this strategy continuously test the strength of the bid order book throughout the day often using algos to drive the mechanics.

However, Unlike many earlier trading sessions previously where I've watched this trading dynamic where sellers would push the stock down in reaction to this strategy and compound weakness, today's trading appears different and the stock is demonstrating strength and accumulation even with the bid book remaining shallow. This suggests to me that an institution may be participating in accumulating shares while remaining behind the curtain.

As an update, the stock just pushed up to $1.45 and the offer of 15k shares at $1.44 disappeared. These lumpy bundles of bulk shares on offer come and go like a test balloon.
