NAND memory is a commodity business. Intel was actually losing money on its SSD products. Intel plans to use the proceeds of the NAND business sale to fund investments in long-term growth initiatives. They have retained the Optaine memory products, the only thing really of value to Intel.

Selling NAND to SK Hynix doesn't result in "sales that need to be replaced". It actually removes an albatross from around Intel's neck and should help Intel refocus on the core parts of its business.

It also allows them to unload Fab 68 in Dalian, China to SK Hynix, a move that may prove prescient given the current political climate.
