this is known as dark pool markets.

it's purpose is to drive better executions

basically you can get a slightly better deal than what your limit order was set for

also known as "off-exchange" trading

it happens on every single stock you can think of. on the big boards it can be seen as well when you see a fractional ending to the price of a trade
