Buyers are not necessarily aware that they are buying from naked shorts.

The "naked shorts" are the MMs. Shorting naked is part of their job. If the market wants to buy, the MMs must sell. They short naked to meet demand and provide liquidity.

And anyone with sense who finds himself in a situation like this one should have been aware he was probably buying some of that stock.

Don't buy into the "short volume" stuff.
