Miami, FL, Oct 21, 2003 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- New York Yankees
first baseman Jason Giambi has been subpoenaed by a grand jury investigating a
company that prescribes nutritional supplements for elite athletes.

Giambi, who is in Miami where the Yankees will play the next three games of
World Series against the Marlins, is one of about 40 athletes who have been
asked to testify in the steroid scandal involving Bay Area Laboratory Co-
Operative (BALCO).

BALCO, a nutrition and diet supplement company, is owned by Victor Conte. Conte
is the subject of investigations by the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal
Drug Administration, the U.S. Attorney's Office and the San Mateo Narcotics Task
Force for his involvement in money laundering, Medicare fraud and steroid
trafficking.

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, track stars Kelli White, Marion Jones
and Tim Montgomery have also been subpoenaed. Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill
Romanowski is also expected to be asked to testify. None has been accused of any
wrongdoing.
