The MF article implied that the different participants were trading a block of the exact same shares. Oversimplification. My example broke the block of shares into individual shares and reconstituted. Exaggeration.

The provenance of shares is not important to me. Tracking this would create a new class of shares and create more complexity. Is there a separate market for "borrowed" vs "unborrowed" shares? I would rather see regulatory effort put into more timely reporting.
