Bird flu spreads in southern Vietnam

HANOI (AFP) - Vietnam has said a series of bird flu outbreaks among poultry has spread to a fifth southern province, raising fears of a nationwide resurgence of the deadly virus this winter.

The latest cases were reported Thursday on a small farm in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long, where 20 chickens died of the H5N1 strain of the virus and 10 more were culled, said the Hanoi-based national animal health department.

The latest outbreak has brought the list of communes that have suffered avian influenza outbreaks since December to 43 in the five provinces of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang, Kien Giang and Vinh Long.
