From all of my experiences and opinions, I believe most accumulation happens when the volumes are small, and buying and selling is even slower.
But I also believe a shake out can accomplish the same thing by running up the volume and per share price and falling off again.
Volumes can get traders emotional. Low or no volumes can get some emotional, and they sell out because they may feel the stock price won't rise. If the stock price and volumes show up, they could get caught up in the emotion of unexpected selling. (Notes have to be taken to determine the differences).
Distributions and shake outs I've noticed, usually have medium to high daily volumes.
I don't normally follow the volume game unless it is low and slow.
Good luck!
