Unfortunately, the question is beyond my pay grade. I would assume that your wife could open up a separate account where you could transfer 1/2 or whatever amount of stock, and you could change the name on your existing account to just your own. Need to reach out to your accountant/tax advisor. I am pretty sure that you would need to do this proactively before but-out and large appreciation in value.
