Possibly. For example, if the filing is released today and says the deal is closed and only shareholders as of 1/6/2021 will receive the dividend.

They could also put the cut off date a week/month into the future. This would create a wave of buyers looking to get in before the cut off date. So you'll have to pay more for shares after the date is announced.
