Rich try calling Apple Support. I've always found someone to help me even if the machine is a few years old. Tell them you just bought some other Apple product (Quicktime Pro, .Mac, AppleWorks, keyboard, etc) and they usually let you slide.

There are a whole bunch of key combinations to hold down during attempted start-up to accomplish different things. Also, they might have you re-set the PMU (power management unit) inside the box.

The bottom line is Apple wants your machine to work. Call them.
