ErnieDog...I wanted to post a quick comment regarding Level 2--I am also in it for the long-haul, however I consider L2 to be rather worthwhile. For example, I have bought many lots of SIRC shares now, and have used L2 every time to help gauge the supply/demand situation each time--it has helped to make the best move according to market conditions IMHO. PS: It is also a free real-time tool through Ameritrade.
