Powder River Basin ashes had the highest extractable REE content, with 70% of the total REE recovered by heated nitric acid digestion. This is likely due to the higher calcium content of Powder River Basin ashes, which enhances their solubility in nitric acid.
The dramatic increase in REE extractability from Na2O2 sintering (as compared to HNO3 digestion alone) suggests that pretreatment with an alkaline agent (such as lime roasting, a common metallurgical process) would be an effective way to liberate REEs without resorting to HF digestion, which may be too hazardous for large-scale industrial use.
