Excellent post Boilermaker1. The only thing that I would add is probably only relevant to a very select few in that nuclear reactors do not create nor destroy matter either.

Nuclear reactions release energy as a result of the change in mass when essentially the sum of the parts do not equal the whole. For example, fission (currently powers reactors & weapons) of the nucleus creates daughter products (usually 2 different nuclei and various nuclear particles) whose total mass is less than that of the previous parent nucleus.

In fusion, the opposite is true in that 2 hydrogen nuclei are combined to create a helium nuclei (like what happens in the sun) but the resulting helium has a total mass less than the 2 parent hydrogen.

These changes in mass are the resultant energy released.

E=mc^2 is really better defined as E = (change in mass)*c^2

Energy and matter are the same thing in different forms. Neither energy nor mass can be created nor destroyed but can only change forms.
