Tiger, every day on any stock the opening price is defined by the first transaction. Is someone is willing to sell a share at 50 cents even though the swiss are at 3$, then this transaction will go thru. Market will not stop it, of course this transaction will be between a dumb shareholder and a lucky MM.
market sentiment is the only thing which adjusts the bids and asks and they define the transaction price.
If tomorrow some big pharma offers us $10 a share you will see the bid and ask jump to that level before the open happens. But let's say tonight I put an order ( good till cancel ) to sell all my shares at 40c. This order will execute (unless I cancel it) at 40 cents on that dreadful morning :).
