TOLEDO, Ohio — ProMedica Toledo Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the country to test a new oral medication to treat COVID-19 on a couple patients as part of a global clinical trial.

"We are in clinical phase 2, 3 testing the drug ifenprodil. It's one of several drugs out in the market currently being tested," explained Dr. Marla Matal, one of the lead physicians in the study.

According to Matal, the patients are receiving the treatment twice a day for as long as they are sick.

"What we hope this drug does is block receptors for the COVID virus that causes acute lung injury and increases the inflammation of the lungs so, by the drug blocking the receptor, we hope to decrease that inflammation and decrease the number of patients who need to be put on life support measures such as getting intubated."

At this point in the trial, doctors are hoping to find out if the drug is working and to make sure it's not causing any adverse effects.

"So at this point, the hope is that we do get people feeling better and not worse and that they get out of the hospital a lot faster to be with their loved ones."

Early indications are that the patients are responding well to the new drug.

"So far we think it's been going well. We don't have the entire data to put it together to see if it's significantly making a difference, but at least patients who have received the drugs, no one has gotten to the point of needing a breathing tube so far."

Moving forward, more hospitals will be added to this trial with the hope of getting up to 160 patients receiving this new drug across the country.
