(IMO), This is usually not how it works.

My records keeping indicate that market emotion, the way shareholders think with regards to share price movement, are usually, wrong.

You might want to do some research on "Market Emotion(s) and Market Psychology".

Market psychology and Market Emotion(s) I think, are two of the greatest misunderstandings that stock purchasers might not know about, understand or just plain don't do their own DD on, before they build a trading strategy.

Believe it or not, earnings of a stock (in most cases) cannot predict the movement of a stock (up or down), or predict when it will move out of it's base(s). (Too many variables to keep track of at one time for most people).

Ever wonder why all these analysists have a different prediction? In my opinion, It is because it cannot be predicted, and if they try, they are usually retracting their analysis up and down. You know, the science of numbers. Always moving.

(You identified this with all the analysists PR's) ;)

I'm not advising anything here, only suggesting a good reference point that may give you a better understanding of market psychology. Once that is better understood, you can possibly move on to other aspects of building an investment or trading angle (strategy) to assist in playing the market like investment firms do.

All in my opinion(s), of course :)
