I know of a recent wind project with a number of fine and expensive large windmills sitting on top of some high rocky hills. The cost per KWH of wind generated, by some measures, did not include the roads to the top of those hills, or the millions which were spent on the electrical inter-connect with the grid. Those interconnects are very expensive. The technology in those transfer facilities is huge, including all the power phase issues.
