ScreamingMedia, M2 Communications
JAN 10, 2001 Motorola Inc has licensed Java technology and voice recognition software from IBM for use in its Telematics iRadio system, an in-vehicle platform for automakers that combines entertainment, information, navigation, emergency calling and communication into one system.
The licensing agreement covers IBM's VisualAge Micro Edition Java technology, which enables new applications and services to be added and enhanced remotely without inconveniencing consumers, and IBM's Embedded ViaVoice Multiplatform Edition voice recognition software. ViaVoice will enable drivers to use voice commands for accessing iRadio's applications.
The iRadio system will become commercially available from early 2001. Automotive products incorporating iRadio technology are expected to be available in vehicles within 1-24 months.
