I do expect a payoff from the $4B / year Intel R&D budget, and a year lead in new processes is one such expectation.

With both Intel and AMD now expecting to ship 90nm parts in Q1, that money didn't buy much of a lead, IMO. AMD already bit the bullet on SOI, and they both will be using strained silicon.

Intel is not doing a very good job of leading.
