It's not necessary but it can save you a lot of money by avoiding a fruitless clinical trial if it fails to work in test animals.

The whole point of this thread was that we have not established any efficacy against COVID in any living creature. So we are not beyond the "mouse and hamster" stage with regard to efficacy.
