Part of the problem is their reliance on machines to do their work and their thinking. I find it deeply disturbing that high school (make that grammar school) graduates can't make change manually. When I was training as a COBOL programmer, we were told to check the mathematical results of our test files manually. If you can't think for yourself how can you verify the answers the machine is giving you?

To rephrase an old photographer's adage:
The computer doesn't lie.
Programmers do.
