A comment of my own regarding:

I am a PI by trade and can sometimes find associates that could serve as surrogates. In fact I can run searches that will actually list associates sometimes or I can dig deeper to find possible associates. If Mr X used surrogates that he may have been associated with in other busniesses or projects it could easily be found. Digging deeper you may be able to find possible surrogates that Mr X has never had a previous business affiliation with. (this is harder to track but not impossible.)


So if we hubbers ever find ourselves in need of this kind of research, maybe I can help.
