I always wondered how that worked. When I was younger the broker sent you an actual peice of paper that said you own x amount of shares in a specific company. But now, it's as if like you said, it's me writing a check and I get a virtual hand shake and an honor system upholds our relationship.
What happenes if the broker disappears? Jailed or dies?
