A Virginia man fleeing from state troopers whipped out a gun during the ensuing struggle and fatally shot himself in the process, authorities said.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya identified the man during a press conference on Thursday as Coleman Lamar Sample. She said authorities attempted to pull over the 23-year-old around 10:23 p.m. Wednesday on I-264 westbound.
He was allegedly traveling 92 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to 13 News Now.
When the vehicle failed to stop, the state troopers gave chase — following Sample onto the exit for the Military Highway, and then back onto I-264. From there, he peeled into the parking lot of Banbury Lake Village Apartments and struck a parked car.
Anaya said that’s when Sample exited his own vehicle and attempted to flee the scene.
Troopers caught up with Sample and attempted to take him into custody, but then he pulled out a gun, according to authorities.
A struggle ensued and Sample was fatally struck in the gunfire. His body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk.
None of the officers discharged their weapon and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation. https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-virginia-man-open-fire-law-enforcement-shoots-self-20200815-zrvequ6o4jezleacbb3ly5w5ji-story.html?fbclid=IwAR0GCdK57fe-H6pl0mc7PT6JnpZk8rGueBj-pcD9QU-SBVfbotSYPZ9G3Y8
