The scenario you described would never happen. It would, of course, be illegal. But it also would not result in any useful outcome.

If a company really had a product or technology that was threatening to existing company's products, they wouldn't short the stock or do anything to manipulate the stock. Good ideas will get funded, one way or another.

Instead, they would either try to acquire the technology themselves, either by acquisition or joint-venture, or invent their own competing product. And time is of the essence - they would not want another company to also recognize the situation and beat them to the punch. Just look at the biotechnology industry for proof of this.

Driving down the PPS of a purported competitor is just a conspiracy theory invented by stock promoters to throw stuckholders off of the real reasons for the price decline. In the real world, it serves absolutely no purpose.
