Netflix flew by HBO at this year's Emmy nominations, receiving a record-breaking 160 nods, while long-time industry leader HBO racked up 107 nominations. It's the second time in three years that Netflix has beaten HBO in nominations for TV's biggest prize, after the pay TV heavyweight had dominated the Emmys for two decades.
When Netflix earned its first Emmy nominations in 2013, it went into the award show as a dark horse. The fact that the company ended up winning three awards for “House of Cards” that year was groundbreaking, as it was the first time that an online exclusive won television’s biggest prize. However, over the past seven years, Netflix has become a regular at the prestigious award show, upstaging many traditional television networks.
