(IMO), Sideways movements in most cases identify the making of a coil. The tighter the coil, the more excited one should get. Before the completion of the coil, there could be a shakeout (a drop in price, before it moves up ward) or the tighter the tail, the price could "gap-up".

Short term traders use these technical on a daily, monthly or semi-annually bases called trends (using markers like candles), but in reality the programs use what is called "Golden Ratios" in the same way I do (they pay a lot of money for programs or services), but I prefer to use long term charts (costs nothing but my time, paper and pencils to learn the techniques). I'm in it for long term capital gains!
