Testing would likely have been most useful after the first suspected case was found. Test and trace to avoid it getting out and spreading. We are too large of a country, unlike S Korea. It's been impossible.

Couple that with not enough tests or equipment to go around, I'm close to agreement not to bother testing unless in a hospital setting.

I think the yelling and screaming over not having enough testing is a circular illogical argument. My wife got tested , was convinced she had it, results came back “NEGATIVE”. She was shocked even has some disbelief over the results. I think it was more about me waiting on her for over a week and as a test for how much I love her... lol! So she went to the grocery store that night, I said shouldn’t you get tested again? The testing brings no definitive conclusion on whether you have the virus or not. I think people who are really sick and go to the hospital need to get tested. Everyone else just assume you may have CV-19, wear a mask and social distance...another test does nothing to determine any resolution. Contact tracing is useless. How do you isolate anyone’s contacts when you go to a grocery store, get your results 12 days later? They are just government useless jobs IMO.
