Been editing the last of the 8000 kodachrome slides from my professional photography days (1972 to 1990) that I put into digital form a couple years ago.
So much easier to be a photographer today, having hauled 100 kodachrome rolls around the globe on my several one year trips. Now you just need one camera, one lens, (ok, maybe two), and a couple of flash cards. Also, I had to be so careful about what I took pictures of, today you can get rid of bad pics easily, and not have to take several of the same picture, so I had enough to send out to several sources back then.
I only had a Leica m3, with 3 lenses, but what I was reminded of was putting tape over the "leica", so it looked like a cheap camera. I told everyone one it was a cheap camera, so nobody would ever try to rob me. I heard of several travelers being robbed of their fancy looking cameras. As I was so young, was tough having people think I had a crappy camera when it was actually worth 10 times what other people used, but safety first! Today I love when people think I am worth 10 times less than
My grandmother, the wisest person I ever knew, was never ostentatious, while my poor father was nouveau riche, constantly showing off his wealth. I paid for my college education, and did not have help from my father when I tried to make it as a photographer. Making life too easy for children is not in their interest (look at the Donald!)
My mother, in the two years when she thought she was fabulously wealthy, after my grandmother died and before she lost it all in terrible investments, showed off her wealth too.Lucky for her, in some ways, she died before she had to face the fact she was almost penniless.
Am so lucky to have had such terrible examples of parenting, to know the real values in life.
