"there is no absolute certainty of stock appreciation over the price on the award date (June 23, 2020) makes me think that this award is not apt to be tied entirely, if at all, to salary deferral."

Agree. there is no absolute certainty. But if this is a case of salary "deferral" then I think the "no absolute certainty" is the point. Yes, the officers would no guarantee that if they agree to not get paid their salaries for a given amount of time in exchange for the SARs, that they will ever recover those payments.

Isn't that what shareholders have been complaining about? Officers continuing to collect large salaries while the share price continues to stagnant or decline?

If the share price does not increase from $2.63, they lose money. The share price will have to double for them to just to be able to collect their base salary amount over the next three years.

Doesn't that better align their interests with those of the shareholders?

I've seen a number of companies recently announce varies plans where company officers are suspending or giving up salaries and other compensation due to the impact of Covid-19.

That's what made me think that Sigma's move could be similar.

So I think this is a possibility, but may not know until mid August.
