1. Friendly Prof's note:

Red pencil chapter FAILURE. "Mean median mode and range" combine as HUGE bell curve middle area to some are at extreme pt skewed. Babble-on as ever. No facts. So how many basic Stat classes skipped? Too many will even drag the "averages test F" down more so take care to see that face now-again far back right, AKA spitballer's corner

Wrong again, professor. For those who read up, the "Mean" is the average. To find it, add together all of your values and divide by the number of addends. The median is the middle number of your data set when in order from least to greatest. The mode is the number that occurred the most often. The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values.

"Mean" (aka average), "Median" and "Mode" are single points on the bell curve - not a range within the bell curve. So when a PR refers to an average as the difference between the highest and lowest g/t its really refering to the range, not the average.

While it may seem like a minor detail to some, it is in reality a significant point. For example, if one were to boast of an average range .5 g/t to 12.0 g/t Au it makes the prospect sound really promissing, when in reality the actual average could be .7 g/t and not a feasible money maker.

It's a deceptive practice and one of the main reasons a person would present data in this fashion is to make things appear better then they really are.
