GSM Association has renamed its 3G offering as 3GSM in an effort to beat CDMA, but analysts say the decision will take sometime to see real results.

Most in the industry believe GSM-->GPRS-->WCDMA will win majority of the market over IS-95-->CDMA 1x-->CDMA2000 EV-DO and EV-DV. However, CDMA's migration cost is far less than WCDMA, and WCDMA is suffering from unstable technology and delays in deployment. Although the number of GSM customers worldwide is eight times of that for CDMA, CDMA has more 3G customers than the GSM camp. Experts say the key to 3G future will depend on which standard China will use, and whether 3G will be competing with Wi-Fi or IP-based 4G.
