There are several reasons for this type of hedging, reasons based on science of living things. Viruses are somewhere on the edges of life, not really alive though they exhibit some of life’s qualities. Between replications, virus particles are essentially crystalline structures, though organized into an envelope, outer protein structures for cell entry, and DNA/RNA that upon cell entry separate from the envelope and head into the cell’s reproductive apparatus.
