As demand spikes for disinfectant, cleaners take on COVID-19

How important are disinfecting chemicals these days? Important enough for Bill McNamara, owner of the Pittsburgh regional office of the Jan-Pro cleaning company, to drive nine hours to Connecticut to personally pick up 200 gallons, spraying his hotel room with an electrostatic cleaning machine before he spent the night.

“Both the chemical and the machine are like gold at this point,” he said. “I was concerned we weren’t going to be able to get it.”

Cleaning companies have seen spikes in demand for disinfecting services during the COVID-19 pandemic, as cleaners and janitors become front-line workers. Jan-Pro, a national company which has 60 to 70 franchises in the Pittsburgh region, has six electrostatic cleaning machines in its Bridgeville regional office.

The machines dispense an electrically charged spray that can coat all surfaces in a room, drying and disinfecting within minutes. The machines are currently backordered for 16 to 20 weeks, said Mr. McNamara.
