Sure, happens all the time. I have thousands of shares of Chinese oil company, CNEP Chinese North East Petroleum, which is still in business doing great but about 15 years ago decided it didn't like having to answer to stock holders so overnight said "we no longer recognize shareholders status or claim on company, as of this morning there are no shares." Obama's SEC eventually said nothing we can do, you are all out of luck and maybe you want to think twice about investing where there is no rule of law, or accounting standards.
