Quarantine will change our lives online: "There will be no difference between real and virtual life"
Enea Angelo Trevisan, CEO of Ealixir Inc., a world-leading Italian company in suppressing unwanted links on the Internet, says that "we can help every citizen to manage and recognize himself in his own 'digital image'".

According to the most influential experts worldwide, the emergency situation due to the coronavirus will profoundly change the way we live in the near future .

There is still at least 18 months to have a vaccine , so we will have to adapt to a life marked by “intermittent” quarantine, depending on the increase or decrease in the number of infections.

On a global scale, smart working will be normalized, which will change not only our social habits but also the urban landscape since, obviously, fewer and fewer offices will be needed .

As it already happens these days, the time that people spend on the Internet will increase dramatically, but not only quantitatively but especially qualitatively: in quiet periods, people will carry out their work activity on the Internet, but when the epidemic begins to be noticed again, the only contact with the outside world will be, as these days, the computer screen .

We will meet people exclusively online, without actually seeing them in person. And the opinion that others will form about us, from possible bosses to new couples, will be deduced from what is said on the Internet, that is, from the links that will appear on the screen after searching our name on Google.

We have discussed this scenario, which just a month ago would have seemed like a science fiction story, with Enea Angelo Trevisan, CEO of Ealixir Inc. , a leading Italian company worldwide in the field of suppressing unwanted links on the Internet , and one step away from listing on the Nasdaq index of the New York Stock Exchange.

-Mr. Trevisan, the Internet runs the risk of becoming the only connection we will have with reality. What will be the consequences?
"We are going to have to be very careful." Online, anyone can enter false information about us, or links to old and outdated information. When this happens, it can be a disaster: we are judged based on events that have never happened or that are part of our past, and that no longer have anything to do with who we are now. If this was true before the pandemic, imagine a world where people, at regular intervals, are forced to stay home and the only way they have to form an idea of ??a person they just met is through links found on the Internet. Fortunately, there are tools that can turn this situation into an opportunity.

-Which?
—At Ealixir, we can help each citizen to manage and recognize themselves in their own “digital image”, that is, in the set of links and information available about themselves that can be found on the Internet. We can remove fake news and outdated information, as well as create positive links of public interest, in order to tell the highlights of a person or his career.

"By what means?"
—In Europe, based on the 2014 ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the “right of suppression (right to be forgotten)”, applied to Internet search engines, we can eliminate links that contain obsolete, false or outdated information . Also, thanks to other privacy regulations, we can do the same in South America and in many other countries around the world. Obviously, we follow a very strict ethical code.

—When you say “code of ethics”, what do you mean?
—With regard to the elimination of harmful links and outdated information, we do not work with people who have committed crimes against women, minors or if they have been involved in drug or organized crime issues. I would like to put on record that this is a free choice: at the legal level, even these people would, in theory, be protected by the right to be forgotten, but for Ealixir some securities are not traded. Regarding the creation of beneficial links, we carry out strict controls on the veracity of the information, and also all our clients are obliged to send us the criminal record certificate.

- Do you not think that common regulations on this subject are lacking worldwide and that there is still a lot of uncertainty?
—We are aware that we work in a very sensitive sector, characterized by a certain legal vacuum worldwide. But the same thing happened when the car was invented: new realities need time to be regulated. Thanks to our ethical code, we are completely calm.

—Removing online links about a person poses problems regarding freedom of the press and expression?
- The right to be forgotten and the freedom of the press are two completely different things, like two parallel lines destined to never meet. The media is free to report and write about any event related to any individual in the world. However, once a news item is no longer current, that is, when it is no longer in the public interest, the right to be forgotten contemplates the right of the person who is the subject of the news to protect their privacy, and prevents that same news chase you for life. Lest's do an imagination exercise. Try to imagine when the Internet did not exist: if a news item appeared in the newspapers or on television, it was talked about while the public was interested. Then, inevitably, the news ended in oblivion, and remained accessible only to people who wanted to do specific research, by consulting a file. The Internet has changed everything: news remains available forever and to everyone, including information that now belongs to our past. It is something unheard of and never experienced before.

—How do you imagine the future, due to the totally new scenarios with which we are forced to face?
- The interconnection between individuals will not stop, the theorists of "the closed society", as Karl Popper called it, will be disappointed. Without a doubt, the specific weight that the Internet assumes in people's lives will increase even more, to the point that there will no longer be any difference between real and virtual life, especially from the point of view of reputation. At Ealixir we have been prepared for a long time.
