There appears to be a wide user base that is ready to hear e-mail read over the phone. Both AOL and Yahoo consider e-mail reading to be a key component of their voice portal services, AOL by Phone and Yahoo by Phone. These applications have been successful enough to warrant continuation: For example, AOL by Phone attracted about 300,000 users in its first three months, and currently handles about 1 million calls per week (numbers supplied by SpeechWorks, which supplies the Speechify TTS system to both users.

Pamela Ravesi, senior director of product management at Lernout & Hauspie NV, said that there is no one universal standard for the deployment of RealSpeak, L&H's flagship TTS product, which has been used in applications as diverse as Webley, BeVocal, TellMe and Ananova.
