Much of the progress in practical systems has been built upon the development in 1985-86 of a continuous-speech recognition model that is independent of the speaker. The breakthrough Sphinx I system was developed by Kai Fu Lee, a Carnegie Mellon graduate student now with Microsoft. His work provided the core recognition technology, which has served as the foundation for creating more and more precise acoustic models.
