Another point I'd make is that DARPA developmental timelines used to be like 20+ years. You know, the people who made the internet, gps, siri, and so much more. I admit their involvement almost necessarily implies high risk, but when other governmental bodies get involved too (albeit on a different vaccine) - I start to think a lot of top people are getting aligned and the high-reward half of the high-risk part starts getting louder in my mind.

If Moderna's broader platform can work - it will completely revolutionize medicine as we know it. For coronaviruses, but so much further beyond.

I don't think the FDA's phases of clinical drug trials were really designed for mRNA treatments. I have no doubt the federal system is robust enough to work with mRNA therapies, but I do think the safety and efficacy factors are skewed compared to more traditional drugs that target more broad receptors or pathways. So essentially I think it's way too early to say whether mRNA treatments will have fewer side effects, but as a layman I can definitely understand a theoretical case of why this might be. It could be that in the future, mRNA treatments will inherently have much shorter developmental times and fewer side effects as vaccines compared to other drugs. .
