Binary silkworm variety is being imported 90% through non-quota from China (mainly LQ2 variety), without quality control and disease control, leading to high risks for producers. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the import of silkworm breeds from China through non-quota channels has further contributed to the lack of dual silkworm breeds, especially in Lam Dong. The official import of silkworm breeds from China to Vietnam to ensure the quality of breeding eggs and disease safety is still in the stage of negotiation and trade promotion, which has not been approved by the partners. Moreover, China only exports hybrid silkworms, not pure silkworms.
Although there have been some studies to breed white cocoon dichotomy varieties in Vietnam, the stability of these varieties is not high, the rate of silk up and the quality of silk are still low. Quantity is not much to supply for production.
