Ya know, I think it's really all about the system. Because Kim has hitched his wagon to (and honed his methods for) silkworms, there just isn't a lot of medically-relevant things you could produce efficiently from them OTHER than silk (which could easily be imbued with medical properties).

Certainly the tech of KBLB could be gently modified to work for other species, but research on vertebrates is a LOT trickier to pull off in scale over inverts. Maybe if he found some big fat grub or worm that could excrete something nice...
