Broad Media Attention Achieved by University of Aberdeen Results with FONAR's Upright Full Range of Motion Multi-Position MRI

MELVILLE, N.Y., Dec 13, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR), The Inventor of MR Scanning(TM), announced that since the initial press conference held at this year's annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) on November 27, that the University of Aberdeen researchers, Dr. Waseem Bashir and Professor Francis Smith, gave over 35 interviews to media. For details of the initial press conference visit: http://www.fonar.com/news/112806.htm

The research is named: 'The Way You Sit Will Never Be the Same! Alterations of Lumbosacral Curvature and Intervertebral Disc Morphology in Normal Subjects in Variable Sitting Positions Using FONAR Whole-body Positional MRI'.

Professor Smith said, "Only the FONAR Upright(TM) Full Range-of-Motion(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI could accommodate the range of positions needed for our study. A conventional MRI is a non-physiologic*, single-position, recumbent-only, static MRI scanner that does not permit the essential physiological positions like the full upright weight-bearing sitting position and other key weight-bearing positions such as upright flexion and extension to be imaged."

* Scans where the body weight-load on the spine, and the compressive forces responsible for back pain, have been removed by lying down

Dr. Bashir said, "This study would not have been possible using a conventional, static recumbent-only MRI scanner and the FONAR Upright(TM) Positional MRI can allow us to examine a range of positions including standing and sitting. As a result, this MRI scanner allows us to examine humans in their natural weight-bearing posture."

The key points of the University of Aberdeen Study using the FONAR Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MR Imager were:

-- The optimal sitting position is when the hips are at a higher level than one's knees, which approximates a 135-degree angle and confirms what ergonomists have long believed is the optimum position to minimize back stress. This posture shows that spinal discs are in a neutral position.

-- The Positional MRI (FONAR Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI) allows patients full range-of-motion during imaging, as opposed to conventional single-position recumbent-only MRI, where the patient must lie flat.

-- Back pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States and the second most common cause of missed work days.
