They may try those techniques, but it's not as simple as it might appear. Silkworms spin cocoons to protect themselves during their metamorphosis into moths. Moths made and lay eggs for the next generation of silkworms.

If you change the dna so that the silkworm produces a drug that squirts out instead of silk, the silkworm won't have a cocoon to protect it during metamorphosis.

Perhaps there is a solution to this issue, but we can't just replace the genes for silk with the genes for something else and expect our silkworms to breed and reproduce. That could well take time and resoiurces that KBLB does not have to spare at this moment.
