I think that if you are able to have 100% spider silk, then you have 100% knock-out and knock-in, ergo that would be the platform worm.

I see what you are saying but unfortunately it is much much more complicated than that. There are many different variables that could make other non-native proteins much more difficult to produce in a silkworm, than making spider silk.

Just one very simple variable would be the bioavailability of amino acids. It would be logical to think that the bioavailability of amino acids to produce silkworm silk would be much more similar to spider silk than creating another non-native protein.

There are many reasons why it could be a challenge. But I sure am hoping that they can solve them.
