Save for later

Mike Feuer, the city attorney of Los Angeles, brought and settled a civil enforcement action against the makers of an at-home test for SARS-CoV-2, NPR reports.

The firm, Yikon Genomics, was selling a $39 test for the coronavirus that it said could be performed at home with a finger-stick blood sample, according to NPR. It adds that the company said in a now-deleted tweet that its test was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, but the FDA has not authorized any at-home coronavirus test.

"We're fighting to protect a very anxious public from falling victim to COVID-19 related schemes, including so-called at-home tests that are falsely advertised and should not be used for in-home testing," Feuer says in a statement. "In this crisis, Angelenos' health depends on accurate, reliable information and legitimate products that can actually help them."

In its settlement with the city attorney, Yikon Genomics agreed to halt marketing and sales of its test unless it receives FDA approval, and refund any customers who purchased the test. In a statement on its Facebook page, Yikon says it "is committed to complying with all state & federal laws and regulations regarding the marketing & sale of medical devices." It adds that it intends to pursue FDA approval for its testing kits.
