Agreed on the volatility concerns. Regarding ATHX - it appears there's just been a hit piece published in SA by a disreputable author (in my opinion) who has a history of SEC violations related to stock manipulation. I believe it was attempt to cover a short position, and as a result the PPS will recover and move beyond.
As always, proceed with caution and stick within your tolerable risk spectrum. I tend to be risk aggressive in general over the past couple of years. Has paid off for me, but I could always screw it up... time will tell.
