The most important information in troubleshooting the problem would be the error code(s) stored in the car’s computer. Error codes aren’t always ‘specifically’ accurate in pinpointing the problem, but along with the vehicle’s symptoms, they sure help in the troubleshooting process. You will probably need a mechanic to retrieve the code(s).

Describe the car as to what service work has been done in the past few years/miles.
Describe the symptoms.
When it doesn’t start, does the engine turn over?
Does it start normally and then quit?
Does it try to start (cylinders firing intermittently)?
When it quits on the freeway:
Does it balk/surge for a bit first?
Does it just instantly die?
When it quits, do the electrics still work (lights, heater/AC fan, radio)?
Will it restart and run properly after a roadside rest?
Is there a ‘trick’ to get it operational again?
