Dividends can be paid in other currency than $. If there is a spin off of a division, share holders of record will be eligible for a share distribution of stock in that new Co. If I was short and this was looming, I'd be screwed. I would have to deliver the dividend to the entity that I shorted stock to. If It's not real stock then I won't be eligible for dividend and be unable to deliver it to new owner. (FU$%^$)
